When the LG Nexus 4 was first announced as not being 4G LTE enabled, there was certainly some mixed response. Some of us didn’t care a less, considering the great price. Others were much more disappointed. No LTE, but was there hope? A faint glimmer of hope for LTE support came when a tear-down revealed that an LTE chip did in fact make its way to the Nexus 4, albeit in a dormant state. Now it seems that some enterprising Canadian modders have managed to get the chip up and working– sort of.
It’s hard to call this a full mod really, as it really doesn’t require anything more than changing a setting in the Android testing menu, *#*#4636#*#* within the dialer. Doing this allowed it to work with the LTE band 4, which is supported by Telus, Rogers and Bell. From the reports it isn’t the strongest signal in the world but it does work, at least in Canada. It is also worth noting that AT&T has support enabled for band 4 LTE in a very select markets in the United States.
While this is interesting news, don’t mistake the LG Nexus 4 as now having the full power of LTE, because it doesn’t. It’s also worth noting that with a simple patch LG and Google could further disable the ability to get the LTE chip and software up and running in order to avoid potential issues over the fact that the phone isn’t approved for use with LTE by regulators.
