In addition to its exciting Grand S tablet/smartphone hybrid, ZTE has another 5-inch device up its sleeve, named the U887. It's not a top-of-the-range powerhouse though, and is aimed at those wanting big-screen thrills on a tight budget .
If you’re already suffering from 5-inch screen fatigue, which is understandable given we’ve talked about the ZTE Grand S, the Huawei Ascend D2, Oppo’s Find 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Grand over the past week alone, then you may want to look away as here’s another one from ZTE. According to recent reports, we’re going to see plenty more over the coming year too, so you may want to use this as preparation for things to come.
So, still with us? Good. It’s time to meet the drearily named ZTE U887. This isn’t the high-spec, range-topping ZTE Grand S which is destined for launch at CES 2013, but a low-end smartphone/tablet hybrid with a modest feature list and basic specs. It’s aimed at the same people who’ll be interested in the Samsung Galaxy Grand, but the price is likely to be even more competitive.
The 5-inch display may be the headline feature, however its resolution will be hidden away in the small print, as this is no 1080p or even 720p panel, instead it has a 480 x 800 pixel screen resolution. Ideal? No, definitely not. Cheap? Almost certainly. Inside the U887 is a 1.2GHz processor produced by MediaTek, however it only has 512MB of RAM with which to play, which could see the device struggle to run the very latest games or future versions of Google Android. Other features include a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 3-megapixel video call lens.
As for its release, it’s not clear whether ZTE has announced the U887 officially, or if we’re looking at a detailed leak. There’s no coverage of the device on ZTE’s site or its social profiles, but Engadget certainly gives the impression it has made its official debut; however Gizchina, one of the original sources, says it’s a leak. All this means we’ve got no solid information on where or when the U887 will go on sale, and how much it will cost.
Its low specification makes it look like a budget offering, and as it’s radio supports both GSM and Chinese TD-SCDMA networks, we’re going to guess it’s set to be released internationally, however the image of the phone shows China Mobile branding. It’s logical to expect more details on the U887 during either CES or Mobile World Congress next year. So who will be next to announce a budget tablet/smartphone hybrid device? There are surely more to come, but how many people really want a phone with a relatively low resolution 5-inch screen?
