Hands on: iPhone 5 review

The Apple iPhone 5 is finally here, with the latest arrival boasting a 16:9, 4-inch screen, new smaller port, thinner, lighter design and 4G LTE.

Last year's iPhone 4S always felt like an incremental upgrade rather than a true step change, and although it sold wonderfully for Apple and brought some interesting additions, few would argue against the suggestion that it opened the door for competitors.

As a result, this year's launch was perhaps most important for Apple since the very first iPhone arrived back in 2007.

For anyone following the iPhone 5 rumours over the past year, the iPhone 5 will not bring any major surprises, with many of the new features expected – including the new dimensions and the improved A6 chip.

The iPhone 5's camera is smaller, hardier and enhanced by the more powerful chip, and the front-facing camera is bumped up to a 720p version. Wi-Fi is improved and the inclusion of 4G is a must have in the current phone world.

But it is the size, design and shape that will win the most admiring glances. The all glass and aluminium chassis can claim to be the thinnest smartphone, at 7.6mm 'thin'.

The 4-inch screen keeps the retina resolution despite the added length, which Apple has brought in to make the iPhone 5 more movie-friendly.

The added real-estate is welcome, especially given the growth of its rivals, and apps will apparently be easy to move onto the new screen size for developers.

In the hand the Apple iPhone 5 certainly feels comfortable. You can see why Apple decided to keep the width the same, since it fits the hand nicely – just as its predecessors have.

The most relevant comparison for many is with its predecessor the iPhone 4S and, for those on the now common two year contracts, the iPhone 4.

The new phone certainly feels different – and although there will be the odd naysayer, the overwhelming majority will feel that the iPhone 5's design is a good step on from the now ageing chassis of both the 4S and 4.

The move away from glass is a welcome one, and the aluminium manages to bring a premium feel in a notable lighter device.

A new chip definitely brings a snappier feel. Many people with an iPhone 4 will be all too used to the lagginess when trying to do anything even slightly complex with the devices, and the Apple iPhone 5 manages to take things on as far as you would expect in more than two years.

What is perhaps more suprising is just how much snappier this feels than the iPhone 4S. The A6 chip clearly has a significant amount more grunt under its smaller hood – but what is surprising is that you can immediately tell when you use the device alongside its predecessor.

Practically speaking, this probably isn't enough to make you want to leave a 4S unless you are a hardcore fan, but it will convince many iPhone 4 users to stick with the Apple ecosystem for another generation – and you get the impression that this is goal number one for the company.

The added length could have made the phone unwieldy, but the loss of thickness ensures that it maintains its balance and premium feel.

Those people who have got used to the iPhone 4 and 4S will certainly notice the difference that the new iPhone 5 design brings. It served to make the device feel more modern, and the materials used keep that premium feel that Apple has put so much stock in.

Thinner, lighter and more screen were always on the cards, and the fans' desires are understandable.

The aluminium backplate feels lovely – just textured enough to feel very different from its predecessors and, to our taste, preferable to the glass.

The iPhone 5 screen is bright and colourful, although it's difficult to truly appreciate the small upgrade that Apple has made in the bright lights of the show room.

The camera is also more difficult to test properly, but it certainly seemed faster to take a photo, something that can be a frustration on older iPhones.

From a software perspective, iOS 6 brings with it a wealth of new features that will certainly make a major difference to not only the way the iPhone 5 feels, but also its predecessors the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S when they get the updated software.

Maps, for instance, is significantly altered after Apple ended its longstanding agreement to use Google Maps and pushed forward with its own offering, in conjunction with sat nav giant TomTom.

The new maps certainly look the part, with some beautiful 3D renders and snazzy looking new vector graphics. We really want to take some time to tell you just how well the new offering performs in the wild, when we get a handset in for our full iPhone 5 review, coming soon.

The showcased flyover mode was great for the riverside of London, but as you would expect fell flat pretty quickly once you left the tourist districts and got to residential areas.

Early indications elsewhere are good, however, as the 'Apple designed' tag is pushed to the fore. The tilt and rotate view functionality looks gorgeous, and the turn-by-turn navigation is likely to attract plaudits with a simple and intuitive interface.

Siri has been given a major, and frankly much-needed, overhaul with the voice 'companion' functionality extended into new languages and new territories in an attempt to turn the iPhone 4S's overhyped and under-featured personal assistant up to a useful level.

It coped better with the noise of the press room than its predecessor – presumably due to the new microphone set up in the new iPhone 5, and could answer the two or three stock questions we asked it.

Given the obsession with Facebook, the need for better integration was a key addition for Apple in its latest operating system, and the iPhone 5 and its older brothers will benefit from a major overhaul of the way in which the social network links up with your handset.

The Facebook (and Twitter) functionality feels much more central to the experience this time around, and having the ability to post from the notifications screen feels like an obvious inclusion that works well.

Early verdict

Given the level of hype around the Apple iPhone 5, it's almost inevitable that phone itself ends up feeling a little underwhelming when it is launched, but Apple is a past master at ticking the boxes, and giving its growing legion of fans enough to justify an upgrade.

Is it going to sell like hot-cakes? Of course. Will it send shockwaves shuddering through the tech world and turn competitors back to their drawing boards? No.

Not having NFC is a real misstep, as it would have made the Passbook application in iOS 6 much better (and in keeping with its Android and Windows Phone rivals) and it certainly would have been nice to see something remarkable in addition to some nice, but not startling, upgrades.

But, in truth, Apple will be well aware that it doesn't need to reinvent the wheel to succeed and, in this case, it has yet again provided a fine phone that will keep it battling at the top of the charts for another year.

There are worries over Apple's new Lightning cable and adapter's backward compatibility, but is it a cause for concern?

Talk of the iPhone 5’s new Lightning cable and its associated adapter is threatening to become this year’s “antennagate.” Confusion reigns as future iPhone 5 owners question whether they’ll be able to use their already-purchased accessories with the new device, or if the adapter’s limitations will scupper that plan.

Apple hasn’t helped by saying neither video or iPod-out is supported by the adapter, along with the disclaimer that “some 30-pin accessories are not supported,” but without adding any much needed detail.

To see if audio dock manufacturers were expecting any problems, we contacted a few of the big names for comment. iHome, North America’s number one maker of iPod speaker systems, said “The Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapters will support audio and charging with iHome docking stations.”

Good news there, then.

Gear4, who along with a wide-range of regular docks, also produces the licensed Angry Birds docks, provided more detail, saying “based on our understanding of the specification of the adapter, it appears that most or all of our products should work with the new iOS devices through the adapter.” This will include speakers that are “app-enabled,” and the forthcoming Renew SleepClock, that can monitor sleep patterns.

Regarding the Gear4 docks that don’t use a 30-pin connector but Bluetooth and AirPlay instead, the USB charging port on the rear is compatible with the Lightning cable and will charge attached devices as normal.

We’ve contacted JBL and Bose for comment too, and will update with their responses.

Gizmodo claims that the lack of iPod-out compatibility will be more of an issue for those who connect their iPhones and iPods to in-car entertainment systems, where apps that previously integrated with the system may no longer do so, and standard-fit controls may not operate the device either.

As for the video out problem, Apple may have a solution, but it’ll involve buying another set of cables. The Verge reports that an Apple representative told them Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA cables would arrive in “the coming months.” If AirPlay’s not an option for you, then it looks like it’ll be best to wait for the new cables rather than splash out on an adapter.

Unfortunately, concrete answers to questions regarding the Lightning adapter may have to wait until the iPhone 5 and new iPods go on sale, and owners get to test it out when the adapter is released in October. Judging by what we’ve heard from manufacturers so far, it may not be as much of a problem as many feared.

EE

Orange and T-Mobile have announced their tariffs for the iPhone 5, but we're yet to see any information regarding their parent company's 4G EE plans - expect these to be announced closer to the time that the network goes online.

If you fancy getting in on the 4G action, EE will apparently make it easy for you to upgrade your iPhone 5 plan from Orange or T-Mobile without an additional charge - as long as you pick a tariff at an equivalent or higher price.

O2

O2 has resolutely stuck with 1GB of data across the board, taking a different approach to everybody else. Quite why it has not decided to offer something a bit different is beyond us and is quite surprising considering the breadth of customers it has. Or perhaps O2 just wants high data usage customers to be picked up by Three?

Calls and texts are unlimited on all tariffs, which fall under O2's On & On brand.

16GB

The handset costs £250, £160, £100, £30 and free on the £26, £31, £36, £41 and £46 tariffs respectively.

32GB

The 32GB handset costs £360, £270, £210, £140 and £90 on the £26, £31, £36, £41 and £46 tariffs respectively.

Orange

Because they're both the same company, we thought (long and hard, obviously) about putting Orange and T-Mobile as one company here. That's because the tariffs are similar in many ways - but there are still have some definite differences so we've separated them out. Orange is far more restrictive on data, for one thing.

Orange's The Works tariff gives you unlimited calls and texts plus provides you with 1GB of data for £36 a month, 2GB for £41, 3GB for £46 and £51 for unlimited internet. 16GB

It's clear that the T-Mobile offering is better value than that of its sister company, Orange. The tariffs start at £36 per month, both offering unlimited texts, with T-Mobile's "Full Monty" giving you 2000 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data. You get unlimited everything with the £41, £46 and £61 deals. The latter is £10 more than the high end tariff on Orange for some reason. Odd.

16GB

Handset prices for are £109, £49, £29 and £19 with the £36, £41, £46 and £61 deals respectively.

32GB

Prices are £219, £149, £99 and £29 with the £36, £41, £46 and £61 deals respectively.

Three

Three has by far the most exciting handset pricing. The guy in the 3 Store we went to explained the great pricing is a result of the network shifting so many iPhone 4S handsets. What's more, Three is keeping things simple and there are just two 24 month contracts to choose from.

The unlimited internet 500 tariff gives you 500 minutes, 5,000 texts and unlimited data, while The One Plan offers up 2,000 minutes plus 5,000 Three to Three minutes, 5,000 texts and all-you-can-eat data for an extra £2 per month - it includes tethering to other devices, too.

16GB

It's an upfront cost of £79 for the 16GB model, while the two tariffs work out at £34 and £36 a month respectively.

32GB

The 32GB iPhone 5 will set you back £89 on Three, while the two tariffs work out at £37 and £39 a month respectively.

64GB

You'll need to pay £109 for the 64GB handset - the two tariffs work out at £40 and £42 a month respectively.

Vodafone

Vodafone's flasgship tariff is the £47 Red Data plan, so you'll get a free handset, unlimited calls and texts, plus 2GB of internet. Vodafone has confirmed this will cover you for Facetime over 3G (but if you're planning to do anything like this, you're probably better off going to an unlimited tariff). It still seems rather expensive for an unlimited tariff compared to Three or T-Mobile though.

The other tariffs also have unlimited texts and calls (aside from the cheap £33 plan, featuring only 600 minutes talk).

16GB

Monthly costs are £47 (Red Data), £42 for 2GB of internet, £37 for 1GB and 500MB on that £33 one. Handset costs are free, £49, £99 and £149 respectively.

32GB

What you need to know about the new Copyright Alert System

Major U.S. ISPS are supporting the Copyright Alert System of escalating strikes when Big Content makes piracy accustations. What do you need to know before it arrives?

Some of the biggest U.S. Internet service providers are getting ready to embrace the Copyright Alert System, a policy of escalating alerts and “mitigation measures” that ISPs will force on their customers when copyright holders accuse them of pirating content.

The Copyright Alert System is often described as a “six strikes” policy — with the implication that if someone’s accused of piracy six times, they’ll lose their Internet service. That’s a misrepresentation. First, it’s a system of four to six alerts — some folks might get six, but others will get fewer. Second, the system doesn’t actually have a stage where users lose their Internet service — as always, that’ll remain solely at the discretion of ISPs, who can turn it off anytime they like for any reason.

So what is this thing, and do you need to be worried about it?

What is the Copyright Alert System?

First, the Copyright Alert System is not a law. It’s a series of escalating notices and educational materials that ISPs will voluntarily present to subscribers allegedly distributing or consuming pirated digital content. The initial emphasis will probably be on movies, television shows, and music, but it can apply to anything. Content owners — movie studios, publishers, record labels, and the like — will give ISPs specific IP addresses any time that users on their networks are allegedly engaging in piracy. ISPs will then start sending notices to users.

The system was supposed to go life in July of this year, but is now expected to roll out with major ISPs by the end of 2012.

Where did the Copyright Alert System come from?

Right now, most ISPs have their own set of policies and procedures for dealing with digital piracy — and they’re usually pretty hands-off. ISPs generally do not want to act as copyright police — they view that role as tremendously costly (with no upside), and a slippery legal slope that could alienate customers. As a result, most ISPs pursue anti-piracy policies in the name of network management — think of bandwidth caps that limit the amount of data subscribers can send or receive, with penalties for going over those limits.

Movie studios, record labels, publishers, and other representatives of the content industry aren’t happy with that situation. When they believe an Internet user is engaging in piracy, they can contact that person’s ISP and present their evidence, but the ISP isn’t under any obligation to do anything about it. After all, the report doesn’t carry any legal weight, and enforcement represents a burden. Most ISPs will warn users (or, sometimes, eventually disconnect them), but the policies are inconsistent and sometimes even non-existent. For the content industry, the Copyright Alert System means a more consistent response to reports of digital piracy — and, more importantly, that participating ISPs have agreed to participate.

For the content industry, the Copyright Alert System is also less likely to blow back on them. If there’s one thing the content industry has proven, it’s that threatening to bring legal action against all fire-sharers they believe might be engaging in piracy is costly, embarrassing, and largely unsuccessful (even with a recent re-instatement of a $222,000 penalty against Jammie Thomas). Groups like the RIAA and MPAA would rather work with ISPs — quietly and directly — than get lawyers involved.

The two groups hammered out the basics of the Copyright Alert System in mid-2011; their memorandum of understanding is filled with legalese but remains the most detailed articulation of the system to date. The system is being shepherded by the Center for Copyright Information, headed up by former People for the American Way executive Jill Lesseris.

What are the alerts?

There is no fixed system of alerts, but ISPs participating in the Copyright Alert System will probably implement four to six stages.

The first time a user’s account is accused of piracy, the ISP will send an alert (probably via email) that their account has been accused of distributing copyrighted material, perhaps as the result of misuse. The notices will point out that piracy violates the ISP’s terms of service and potentially subjects users to malware and other security risks. The notice will also point out legal ways for users to get the digital content they want.

If the alleged behavior doesn’t stop, the notices will escalate, but how remains up to the ISP. One path might be to send another notice, or perhaps send notices via postal mail or with return receipt technologies if the alleged abuses continue. From there, ISPs can move on to “mitigation” measures, like throttling a user’s Internet service, redirecting Web browsers to a landing page telling users they’ve been accused of piracy, or forcing them to watch educational videos before letting them resume full Internet access.

The Copyright Alert System does not mandate any fixed number of “strikes” that will cause users to lose their Internet access. Any decision to terminate Internet service is completely in the hands of individual ISPs, just like it is today. In fact, it actually has some protection systems for users built in. Any mitigation actions taken by the ISP cannot terminate email service, voice services (like calling 911) or things like home security and health equipment monitoring services.

What ISPs are involved?

Right now, AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon have all agreed to participate in the Copyright Alert System. Combined, these ISPs account for about three quarters of all residential Internet service in the United States.

Who is doing all this “alleging”?

The two main organizations representing the content industry in the Copyright Alert System are the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Both organizations already employ organizations to track and identify systems engaged in digital piracy, usually over peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

How will accusations work?

Record labels and movies studios hire companies (like Peer Media or DtecNet) to sniff out pirates. Once they identify a torrent or other pirated content that they believe infringed on their copyrighted content, they can collect quite a bit of information, including the IP addresses of other users connected to a torrent, whether to upload or download the content. In the industry’s eyes, all those people are conducting or at least enabling piracy. Sometimes, the companies will even bait pirates by seeding torrent sites and other peer-to-peer services with blocks of data that purport to be hot new content items… and then seeing who nibbles.

Once the IP addresses of alleged infringers have been identified, they will be passed along to the ISPs — with timestamps, which ISPs need for this information to be meaningful. Under the Copyright Alert System, the ISPs will initiate (or escalate) alerts or mitigation steps applied to the identified subscribers. Under the content alert system, the ISPs will not be sharing users account information with the MPAA, RIAA, or each other, nor will they be sharing the lists of IP addresses accused of piracy. If the MPAA or RIAA wants that information to initiate potential legal action, they’ll still have to get it the old-fashioned way: by filing a suit and doing discovery.

But I’m not pirating anything!

The content industry doesn’t care whether the alleged sharing is deliberate or inadvertent. Under the Copyright Alert System, they’re out of the loop once they’ve reported infringement to the ISPs — any enforcement actions are solely in their hands.

There are plenty of scenarios where someone could be accused of piracy without committing it. For instance, if you run your wireless network without security, or it has simply been compromised, anyone in range could be using you Internet connection (and IP address) to download or upload pirated content.

Small businesses are another great example: Lots of cafes, coffee shops, book stores, restaurants, bars, hair salons, grocery stores, and even offices offer free Wi-Fi as a convenience to patrons or clients. Despite their lack of control, they will find themselves subject to the Copyright Alert System. And, although it’s rare, the technosavvy can pretty easily crack passwords on many Wi-Fi networks. That quiet kid in the apartment down the hall might be doing all his torrenting on your Internet connection, rather than his own.

If users believe they’ve been unfairly or inaccurately accused of piracy, the Copyright Alert System does allow folks to request an independent review to be conducted by the American Arbitration Association — starting the process will involve a $35 fee.

More insidiously, the Copyright Alert System has no “watchers for the the watchers.” ISPs will take groups like the RIAA at their word that they’ve reliably determined an IP address is engaging in piracy. If those reports are wrong — whether through a technical errors or deliberate fraud or harassment — it looks like everyday Internet users paying the price.

Do “strikes” carry over?

Nobody knows yet, but right now the indication is “no.” The Copyright Alert System is set up so ISPs don’t share account data or IP address lists with the content industry or each other. In theory, that means a user accused of piracy while using one ISP wouldn’t have those black marks on their record if they switch to another ISP.

So how can I protect myself?

Most everyday Internet users will never notice the Copyright Alert System — especially if they’ve locked with their Wi-Fi networks. The content industry is generally learning that making media easily available via legitimate channels — like iTunes, Netflix, and other mechanisms — is the best way to deter piracy. So, the simple way to avoid being dinged by the Copyright Alert System is probably not to engage in piracy. Mistakes may happen, but that should keep most users clear.

Folks who do engage in file sharing — which is not in itself illegal — can take steps to protect themselves. Using encryption technologies in file-sharing client software probably won’t do much to protect users: Sure, ISPs won’t be able to peer into your traffic, but ISPs generally don’t want to peer into your traffic anyway. However, other users of the file-sharing service will be able to see what you’re doing, and some of those users work for RIAA and MPAA. And they know how to work around things like PeerBlock that claim to keep spying eyes off your file sharing.

The cleanest way for file-sharing users to protect themselves is probably by using VPN (to encrypt data transiting your ISP’s network) or proxy services. A proxy will effectively mask a user’s IP address from other users on a peer-to-peer network; a VPN establishes an encrypted connection for all network traffic to and from your computer. Neither are foolproof (or necessarily easy to set up), but they represent the best, easily available technology to stay out of sight of the Copyright Alert System.

Should I worry?

The Center for Copyright Information is right about one thing: most users will probably never need to know the Copyright Alert System exists. Folks who watch movies via Netflix, download some stuff from iTunes, and watch videos on YouTube have nothing to worry about. For the time being, the MPAA and RIAA are mostly concerned with peer-to-peer file sharing through services like BitTorrent, and particularly, folks who make copyrighted content available on those services.

The thing is, serious content pirates are already used to working around piracy reporting systems like this. They encrypt their traffic, set up seed sites outside the United States, and generally know what they’re doing. The Copyright Alert System is not going to stop them or even slow them down.

The real question is how smoothly — and competently — piracy sleuths and ISPs can manage this system. If piracy reports are very accurate and ISPs actions on them consistent, the Copyright Alert System will at most be a minor annoyance for folks who are inadvertently participating in piracy, and just “business as usual” for serious pirates.

If the system is inaccurate or causes users to unfairly lose Internet access — particularly in areas where there’s little or no competition for Internet service — then the Copyright Alert System could become another albatross on the content industry’s shoulders — just like DRM and claiming sharing 24 songs on a file sharing network was worth $1.5 million in damages.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is expected to sell over 20 million units, double what it's predecessor, the Galaxy Note, sold.

Samsung's head of mobile JK Shin revealed the firm's ambitious sales target to reporters, expecting the Galaxy Note 2 to blow the original Note's 10 million sales out of the water.

It's a bold statement from Samsung, especially as a lot of people remain unconvinced on the whole phone-tablet crossover, with questions raised over the usability of Note 2's huge 5.5-inch display.

The Galaxy Note 2 certainly has an impressive spec sheet, sporting a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, that massive Super AMOLED HD display, 8MP rear-facing camera with flash, NFC, Samsung's special S-Pen stylus - plus it'll run the latest flavour of Android, Jelly Bean.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 release date is yet to be confirmed, but Unlocked Mobiles reckons we'll see the handset on October 15, although we're not holding out too much hope that it's got it right.
