US House supports 5 more years of foreign surveillance

Monitoring, if passed by the Senate, to continue until 2017

While everyone is concentrating on whether or not President Barack Obama will get four more years in the White House, the FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 cleared the U.S. House of Representatives this week, giving the controversial act an additional five years.

This extension of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which was due to expire on Dec. 31, 2012, passed on a 301 to 118 vote. Since 70 percent of representatives (227 Republicans and 74 Democrats) voted in favor of the bill, it exceeded the simple majority required to pass.

"The Act allows intelligence professionals to more quickly and effectively monitor terrorist communications, while protecting the civil liberties of Americans," states to the bill's summary. The text attempts to make the case by illustrating foreign surveillance before the FISA Amendment.

"Admiral McConnell stated that the Intelligence Community was not collecting approximately two-thirds of the foreign intelligence information that it collected prior to legal interpretations that required the government to obtain individualized FISA court orders for overseas surveillance."

The bill cites changes in technology as justification: "This is contrary to what Congress intended when it enacted the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in 1978 and had come about due to changes in telecommunication technology."

Dubbed 'warrantless wiretap bill' by opponents

Critics have long decried the FISA Amendment as an overreach by the federal government and a violation of citizens' Fourth Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution.

The provisions of the FISA Amendment and its 2012 extension are a work around of The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978. That bill prevented the government from using its vast resources to spy on Americans in the wake of Richard Nixon's involvement in Watergate.

This has led opponents to routinely refer to the FISA Amendment as a "warrantless wiretap bill" and a spy program in which citizens can be unfairly targeted. On the latter criticism, dissenting Congressmen decry the lack of data available on how many citizens have been affected.

Backers, on the other hand, simply use its official name and point to the fact that the bill "requires court orders to target Americans for foreign intelligence surveillance, no matter where they are, and requires court review of the procedures used to protect information about Americans."

On to the Senate

Following its passage on the House floor, the FISA Amendment of 2012 is due for a vote by the Democrat-controlled Senate.

The Senate, however, rubber stamped the FISA Amendment of 2008 with 22 Democrats and 46 Republicans voting in the affirmative. The only dissenters were the 27 Democrats.

On top of its bipartisan support, President Obama is in favor of the Bush-era Amendment and voted for the bill as a Senator in 2008. Prior to that vote, however, he opposed the Act because it retroactively granted immunity for telecommunications companies.

Microsoft freebies: Ballmer to give all employees free Surface tablet, PC and phone

Microsoft Surface Tablet display screen apple ipad killer

Microsoft's giving all 90,000+ of its workers a bunch of free stuff, including its soon-to-launch Surface tablet.

Microsoft’s annual employee bash took place in Seattle this week, an event off-limits to the media and public. With Steve Ballmer at the helm, the gathering usually involves a spot of perspiration, speeches from various Microsoft executives and, this year, free stuff.

All 90,000+ full-time employees of the Redmond-based computer company are set to receive not one, not even two, but three lots of free goodies, according to a Forbes report.

Ballmer promised his army of workers an RT Surface tablet, a Windows 8 PC and a Windows Phone 8 device. While workers will be free to use the tablet and phone at home and for work, the PC is for work only.

The report said some employees posted messages on Twitter and Facebook expressing their delight at their boss’s announcement, with one describing it as the “Best. Company meeting. Ever.”

It’s a generous giveaway, for sure, but it’s also designed to get Microsoft employees up and running with its new products and next-generation OS, scheduled for launch next month.

Microsoft will also want to get its workers familiar with its new Surface tablet, and hopefully singing its praises to anyone who’ll listen. The Surface marks the computer giant’s entry into the tablet market, already crammed with competitors, and dominated by Apple with its mass-selling iPad.

The Surface has a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and comes with a Touch Cover keyboard. The tablet comprises two models, one running Windows 8 Pro and a more basic version running Windows RT.

The RT model will hit stores at the end of next month while the Surface Pro isn’t expected to be available until early 2013.

MGM picks up film rights to novel-turned-hit game Metro 2033

Metro 2033

Barring production catastrophes, the next video game to be adapted for the silver screen might be cult hit Metro 2033.

In 2002, Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky published a novel to the Internet dubbed “Metro 2033.” At the time Glukhovsky had envisioned Metro 2033 as an experiment in modern publishing. He hoped it would be a hit, but never envisioned that it might be successful enough to spawn a traditional ink-and-paper novel (published in Russia in 2005 and in America on March 18, 2010), an objectively excellent video game which appeared on both the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs, and the upcoming video game pseudo-sequel Metro: Last Light.

However, it seems that even these additional iterations of the story are not enough for Glukhovsky. Thus, it was announced moments ago that MGM had purchased the film rights to the original Metro 2033 novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film ‘s script will be written by virtually unknown scribe F. Scott Frazier, while the film is being produced by the similarly anonymous Mark Johnson (who is best known, the Hollywood Reporter claims, for producing the recent Chronicles Of Narnia films as well as 1999′s Galaxy Quest).

As for the plot, THR offers the following brief synopsis:

The story is set in 2033, after a nuclear holocaust devastates Moscow and survivors head under ground. The focus is on a young survivor who is forced to go on a journey that will see him deal with mutants, soldiers of a Fourth Reich and political factions of various metro stations in order to reach above ground.

That seems a pretty solid reiteration of the plot seen in both Metro 2033 game and the novel that serves as its source material. It does not, however, give us much idea of what direction this film might take. With such a little-known group of auteurs working on the project, we could see it going in any number of directions. Oppressive dystopian flick about the horrors man might inflict on his fellow man when facing the end of the world? That seems likely, but on the other hand we could also see the film being a pitch black dark comedy. For that matter we could even see the thing as a musical — not because that’s what we’re hoping for, but because Metro 2033 offers myriad different ways of adapting the tale for film.

Though we’re intrigued by this revelation, the still-hypothetical Metro 2033 movie lacks one crucial element: An official release date. IMDB doesn’t even have a listing for this project as of yet, so we’re currently unable to offer the Internet’s best guess on when the flick might debut. If forced at gunpoint we’d peg the release of Metro 2033 (or whatever it’s eventually titled) at “Summer 2014,” though again, that’s a total shot in the dark. Hopefully MGM, Frazier or Johnson sees fit to offer up additional official details in the near future, though until that time we urge you all to play or replay Metro 2033. I sat down with the upcoming Metro: Last Light at this year’s E3, and from what I played it seemed like a very solid first-person shooter, and it’s almost certain that you’ll want to be caught up with Metro 2033 canon before plunking down a wad of cash for theater tickets.

EA and Sony partner to boost real world veteran non-profit orgs

Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Warfighter franchise is to get a special extension at the end of this year, with maps adding real-world locations used in an upcoming movie about the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden being added, and proceeds from the expansion going to help real world veterans.

Videogames, movies and the real world are coming together in an unprecedented way to promote both Electronic Arts’ Medal of Honor Warfighter franchise and Sony Pictures’ Zero Dark Thirty, with part of the proceeds raised by the partnership going to help veterans organizations. Finally, a chance to feel really good about killing virtual bad guys, one at a time.

The partnership between EA and Sony will see exclusive multiplayer maps for the Medal of Honor Warfighter game being made available for download later this year that feature locations from Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming Zero Dark Thirty movie (If the title of that particular production sounds familiar, it may help when I tell you that it’s the new project from filmmaker Bigelow – best known, perhaps, for her work on the amazing The Hurt Locker – and screenwriter Mark Boal that brings the successful mission to locate and kill Osama Bin Laden to life). With each download expected to cost somewhere in the region of $9.99, EA has pledged to donate a portion of profits – “At least $1 million,” according to the company – to Project HONOR, a program designed to raise charitable contributions for non-profit veterans organizations across the country.

Two new locations will be added to the game via these packs, both of them based on real world areas. The first is Darra Gun Market, an arms bazaar in Pakistan, with Chitral being the second location; it’s an area in the far north of Pakistan that borders Afghanistan and China.

EA’s Chief Operating Officer, Peter Moore, said in a statement about the partnership, “Medal of Honor Warfighter is inspired by real world events, real operations, and real warriors,” adding that the partnership with Sony allows the company to “give back to the Special Operations community in honor of the sacrifices they and their families have made for their country and to connect people to the story of the greatest manhunt our world has seen.” It’s a tone that Boal, the screenwriter who worked with Bigelow onZero Dark Thirty, continues. “Working with Project HONOR is a meaningful way for us to continue our support for combat veterans throughout the armed services,” he said. “We are thrilled to be a part of this effort, and we’re humbled that EA is stepping up to the plate with such a significant contribution.”

As part of the deal between EA and Sony, a limited-edition Medal of Honor Warfighter disc will be released before the downloadable packs that will feature a trailer for Zero Dark Thirty. The downloadable map packs are scheduled for release during the week of December 17, timed for the release of Zero Dark Thirty in theaters.

Weekend Open Forum: What games have you replayed and why?

Although Steam and its ilk coax me into buying new games regularly, it's uncommon for me to beat them and it's even rarer that I take them for a second spin -- especially once I've abandoned them. However, for whatever reason, a handful of games still manage to hold my interest after five or more playthroughs.

I fire up Splinter Cell and Hitman several times a year and I've played through Chaos Theory half a dozen times since 2006ish. Collectively, I've beaten titles in those franchises more than 20 times. Similarly, on the multiplayer side, I've repeatedly revisited StarCraft (and now StarCraft II) for a month or so every year since 2002.

It seems I'm not alone here. Most gamers I've spoken with replay certain titles or series semi-regularly, whether for nostalgia or simply because they can't have the same experience elsewhere -- I believe the latter applies to my fondness of Splinter Cell and Hitman. Have you revisited any games several times, and if so, why?

Microsoft drops Marketplace name for Windows Phone Store

Microsoft drops Marketplace name for Windows Phone Store

Bye bye Marketplace

Microsoft is retiring the Marketplace branding from Windows Phone, replacing it with the new Windows Phone Store.

The name change makes the Windows Phone Store more consistent with the Windows Store on Windows 8, while also introducing a redesign for parts of the store.

The Windows Phone Store now launches on a Spotlight section that shows tiles of recently released apps picked by Microsoft.

Once inside the store, browsing for apps is made easier as the old Marketplace categories for New, Free, and Top apps have been updated with the new categories Featured, Top Free, Top Paid, New+Rising, and Best Rated.

The search bar has also been improved, now using Bing search. It will be able to recognize similar apps that may not include your exact search term, and will learn through continued use to provide more relevant results.

Coming to a smartphone near you

The changes have already begun through the Windows Phone Store web portal. On the official Windows Phone website the updated store can be accessed through the newly labeled "Apps+Games" tab.

The redesign will be duplicated as the Windows Phone Store layout on Windows Phone 8 devices when they launch later this year.

To help get ready for the Windows Phone 8 launch, check out our roundup with all the latest launch details.

iPhone 5: Everything you need to know

Apple iPhone 5

At its event in San Franciso on September 12, Apple finally lifted the veil on the long-awaited iPhone 5. Our complete guide to Apple's newest flagship phone.

Full Coverage From Apple's 9/12 iPhone 5 Launch Event

Confirming all the rumors detailing its appearance, internals, and bundled earbuds, the iPhone 5 launch was very predictable. But lack of shock-factor aside, the new handset still has a lot to offer. Apple’s newest iPhone has been slimmed down, suped up, and redesigned. If you want to know more about the iPhone 5 then you’ve come to the right place.

Advanced Retina Display

iPhone 5 displayWith the iPhone 5, Apple changed the size of the iPhone screen for the first time ever. The new screen is elongated, with a widesceen aspect ratio to 16:9. The new 4-inch, Retina display is described by Apple as “panoramic” and boasts 44 percent more color saturation than the iPhone 4S, making it full sRGB (aka: it’s gorgeous).

Apple also introduced new touch technology to the display of its latest smartphone. Rather than having two layers, the pixels in the screen and the touch sensors have been integrated into a thinner, single layer. The pixels actually sense the user’s touch all on their own, without the need for separate components. What does this mean for you? Much better viewing angles, a clearer image, a lighter device, and a thinner profile.

Updated Design

iPhone 5 designThe design of the new iPhone was no surprise as Apple has obviously lost control of its secrets in a post-Jobs era. The iPhone 5 looks exactly as it was portrayed in many leaked images. Lead designer Jony Ive said Apple has “never built a product with this extraordinary level of fit and finish.” Made with a glass display and an aluminum unibody, the iPhone 5 comes in the standard color options: black or white. Thanks to its new touch-integrated display, the iPhone 5 is the thinnest LTE smartphone in the world at just 0.29 inches. It’s also 20 percent lighter than the 4S at 112 grams or 3.95 ounces.

A6 Processor

A new iPhone means a faster CPU. This one’s called the A6 — following the established numbering system — and Apple claims it is two times faster than it’s predecessor, able to load web pages 2.1 times speedier.

iOS 6

One advantage of buying the latest Apple product is having a device designed specifically for the latest and greatest software version. iOS 6 brings a lot of new features to the table, and builds on many of those introduced in iOS 5. For instance, Siri will now play nice with Yelp, Opentable, and Fandango. It’s also able to launch apps (finally). Facebook is now integrated into the OS alongside Twitter, and Safari has an offline reading list. Apple’s thrown in its own version of Google Maps with Yelp support and turn-by-turn navigation. Passbook is a new feature as well, essentially a wallet app that can store your boarding pass, Starbucks card, and more. Read our full breakdown of iOS 6 for extra details.

Connectivity

“Ultrafast Wireless” is the moniker Apple’s chosen for its latest wireless chip. The single chip supports standards necessary to operate on all carriers, according to Apple. It can handle HSPA+ (20Mbps), DC-HSDPA (42Mbps), and LTE (max 100Mbps). The iPhone’s Wi-Fi has been beefed up as well, sporting 802.11N (dual-channel, 2.4GHz and 5GHz) and a max speed of 150Mbps. The iPhone can, like most modern routers, switch between connections for the best results.

Sadly, Verizon said recently that the iPhone 5 will not support simultaneous voice and data connections, even on LTE. This is in direct contrast to the rest of its LTE phones, which can all handle voice and data. The feature won’t be supported by Sprint either. AT&T, however, has confirmed with The Verge that its customers can simultaneously access voice and data over HSPA+ or LTE.

Improved Audio

iPhone 5 audio componentsWanting to make its iPhone refresh as thorough as possible, Apple made sure its audio components underwent a makeover as well. The iPhone 5 features three microphones: one on the bottom, back, and front. As a result, the sound quality of recordings and voice calls will be improved. In a truly impressive move, Apple has managed to include noise cancelling without the need for external hardware. In real world use, this means background noise should be muted as much as possible during voice calls. And with what Apple calls, “wideband audio,” the iPhone 5 will use more bandwidth to transmit higher-quality audio over your network. This feature will depend on carrier support, however.

The internal speakers are now 20 percent smaller and yet have grown from three to five magnet transducers for a richer sound.

Last but certainly not least, the EarPods are Apple’s latest bundled earphones for its new mobile devices. Designed to be much more comfortable and better-sounding than the current unwieldy earphones, the EarPods are also more ergonomic and meant to fit comfortably in the ear. We look forward to trying these out.

Camera Features

iPhone 5 panorama modeApple spent a lot of time talking up the iPhone’s camera improvements in its live event, putting the strongest emphasis on its new panorama mode, though it blissfully ignored the fact that most high-end smartphones already have this feature. It works much the same here, you simply pan the phone across an area and the software will stitch the images together for you. The iPhone 5 will even correct blur from your shaky hands and remove any moving objects.

The back camera keeps the five-element optics and 8-megapixel sensor (3264 x 2448) found in the 4S. It also has backside illumination, an f/2.4 aperture (slower than the F/2.0 aperture on the HTC One X and Evo 4G LTE), and a hybrid infrared filter. A few video features have been tossed in as well: still photo capture while recording, improved image stabilization, and face detection.

The iPhone 5 also ships with a dynamic low light mode. The new image processing chip picks out the areas of a photo in need of noise reduction and leaves the rest alone. Because of this, Apple claims photography in low light is much improved. In addition, photos can be taken 40 percent faster than the 4S, which already has a super fast shutter. Even the lens has been revamped, this time made with a sapphire crystal (the next hardest material to diamond).

FaceTime is now in 720p HD and, as long as carriers play nice, video conversations will be available over a user’s cellular network. Like the rear-facing camera, the front-facing one has face detection built-in. According to The Verge, Verizon has recently stated users may run FaceTime over the network with no extra charge, regardless of which data plan they have. Sprint has also said it won’t be charging for the service, while AT&T will only allow it if you sign up for a new Mobile Share data plan

Lightning Connector

iPhone 5 Lightning ConnectorHere’s where Apple’s going to frustrate a lot of Apple users who have undoubtedly amassed a large collection of 30-pin connectors Luckily (or unluckily, depending how you look at it), the new, smaller 8-pin connector can still be used with older cords by purchasing a $30 adapter. A neat feature of the Lightning connector is its reversible orientation, it will plug into your device no matter which side is up.

Battery Life

The battery life of the iPhone 5 is nowhere near the impressive numbers shown earlier this month in Motorola’s newest RAZR line, but for the average user, it will do. Apple states the official numbers as 225 hours on standby, 8 hours of 3G talk, 8 hours of browsing with LTE, 10 hours on Wi-Fi, and 30 hours of video.

Availability and Pricing

On September 21, the new iPhone will be available in the United States, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Availability will extend to the remaining countries on September 28. Pre-orders began at midnight on Sept. 14. If you’re trying to get an iPhone 5 at launch, keep informed with our “How to Find an iPhone 5” article, which we’re updating with availability information as we get it.

The iPhone 5 will come in three different storage sizes and price points: 16GB for $200, 32GB for $300, and 64GB for $400. These prices include a two-year contract, however. At full price, the phone starts at $650 for the 16GB model. And since the iPhone 4S is old hat now, it will be offered for $100 on a two-year contract with the iPhone 4 costing zilch, nada, nothing after signing on the dotted line.

After the dust has settled, the iPhone 5 still stands tall as a premium gadget offering superior performance, outstanding build quality, and snappy wireless speeds. But is that enough? Will you be waiting in line for the sixth generation of Apple’s infamous smartphone-to-rule-them-all or are you sitting this one out?

Rumor: Lumia 920, Galaxy Note II to launch Oct. 21 at AT&T

Rumor: Lumia 920, Galaxy Note II to launch Oct. 21 at AT&T

AT&T may be getting the Lumia 920 and Galaxy Note II on Oct. 21

If new rumors are correct, it won't be long until consumers are finally able to get their hands on Nokia's Lumia 920 or Samsung's Galaxy Note II.

BGR is reporting sources close to AT&T say the cellular carrier will debut both smartphones on Oct. 21.

In case you were wondering, that's exactly one month after the iPhone 5 is set to debut in nearly 30 countries.

Despite neither phone coming with a price tag attached as of yet, that doesn't mean Nokia and Samsung aren't expecting big things from their respective devices.

Great expectations

Samsung is betting big on their Galaxy Note II, and they believe their latest device will outsell its predecessor.

JK Shin, Samsung's head of mobile, was even so bold as to suggest the Galaxy Note II would sell 20 million units.

That's double what the original Galaxy Note managed to sell.

Though Nokia is also hoping their Lumia 920 will move a lot of units, they may have to temper their expectations just a bit.

Any hope Nokia had of the new Lumia's success may have been marred by their recent admission of guilt in the doctored footage scandal that has plagued the Windows Phone 8 handset's debut.

TechRadar reached out to AT&T for comment on the release dates and potential pricing, and will update this article if and when information becomes available.

iPhone 5: Everything you need to know

apple iphone 5 everything you need to know

At its event in San Franciso on September 12, Apple finally lifted the veil on the long-awaited iPhone 5. Our complete guide to Apple's newest flagship phone.

The design of the new iPhone was no surprise as Apple has obviously lost control of its secrets in a post-Jobs era.

Making headlines…

* The iPhone 5 is official. Earlier this week, Apple held a press conference where it drew back the curtain on its next-gen iPhone. Pre-orders open starting today, September 14, and the new smartphone will be available in stores on September 21. Hidden behind the new 4-inch screen is some powerful tech centered around an A6 processor. This is the first of Apple’s phones to offer support for 4G LTE networks thanks to a new wireless receiver. Buyers can also expect to find an improved camera that shoots faster and performs better in low light conditions. We’ve got tons and tons and tons of iPhone 5 coverage, both from earlier this week and ongoing. Check it all out right here.

* It’s been another big week for Steam’s new Greenlight service, which is a crowdsourced platform where users can vote on which games should be sold through Valve’s digital distribution service. The first round of up-voted games has officially been approved by Valve for eventual release, which means 10 new Steam titles will soon be available on a gaming PC near you. There are some solid picks in there, as you might expect, including Black Mesa, the long-in-development HD remake of Valve’s classic FPS Half-Life. The list is pretty heavy on horror titles, notably including The Indie Stone’s inventive Project Zomboid. Anthony’s report has the full rundown. Also, be sure to check back in on Sunday, September 16, for Anthony’s interview with the developers behind the newly greenlit Greenlight title, No More Room In Hell.

* The guy who made Wing Commander is making games again. I’ll give you a moment to catch your breath. The long-ignored genre of space flight combat simulators was long, long ago led by Chris Roberts’ Wing Commander series. Featuring a rich fictional universe filled with memorable characters and a flavor all its own, the Wing Commander games quickly turned into what passed for AAA development at a time when PCs outpaced consoles much more than they do today. Now Roberts is planning a reveal for October 10, 2012, the same days as GDC Online, and it’s something related to his new Cloud Imperium Games studio. It sounds like he’s moving in more of an online-focused direction than a story-driven one, but we’ll have to wait until next month to learn more.

* Gamers want some flavor of Borderlands on their PlayStation Vita. Series creator Gearbox Software does as well. Sony? Probably, right? Borderlands is totally a big deal, with next week’s Borderlands 2 standing as one of the most pre-ordered games in publisher 2K Games’ history. The Vita platform is starved for content, and a Borderlands game would drive fans wild. Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford knows it too, but he’s not about to start putting his team to work on developing a new Borderlands for the Vita. He said as much in a recent interview, adding “I think Sony should step up and make that happen.” Pitchford explained that he’d be totally okay with his studio’s baby being ported to the Sony handheld, but it’s a project that would have to be taken on by another developer. Here’s hoping all of this talk actually leads to the reality of Borderlands gameplay on the go.

* The standalone version of Dean Hall’s Arma 2 zombie mod DayZ continues to be a thing that people are talking about. We already know that the plan is for the Bohemia Interactive-developed DayZ to embrace the same sort of release model than Mojang did with Minecraft, releasing the game in an early and unfinished state at a reduced price, and then using the post-release player base as a testing environment to fine-tune the way it all works. All of which is great, but producer Jan Kunt noted in a recent interview that the PC-focused team is nonetheless aware that there’s a big community of gamers who only play on consoles. Will DayZ make the jump? Nothing’s set in stone yet, but it’s definitely something they want to make happen at some point down the road.

Top buys for the week…

Ghost Recon Future Soldier - Raven Strike DLCGhost Recon: Future Soldier - Raven Strike DLC :: PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 :: $14.99 / 1,200 MS Points

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier just got a little bit larger. The newly released Raven Strike DLC pack adds three new campaign missions to the game plus an all-new map for Guerilla mode. The missions are the highlight, as you can read in my review. With support for one to four players, you’ve got what amounts to more of the same fantastically well-designed cover-shooting steath/action mix spread out over three sprawling environments. It’s a bit rough around the edges in some ways and there are missed opportunities for even better content here and there, but the overall package is totally worth it if you enjoyed the original May 2012 release.

Double Dragon: Neon :: PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 :: $9.99 / 800 MS Points

WayForward Technologies has done a dynamite job in the past of tickling the game community’s love for the old days, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the newly released Double Dragon: Neon. The game is fundamentally the same as its coin-op predecessor on a mechanical level, but the graphics have been spruced up and the systems that tie everything together have been blown out in a big way. It’s still just two bro-dudes out to save a pretty lady from the clutches of an evil jerk, but now the action touches on everything from urban back alleys to outer space. It’s totally over the top and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

anomaly warzone earthAnomaly: Warzone Earth :: PlayStation 3 :: $9.99

This isn’t the first time Anomaly: Warzone Earth has been featured in Digital Blend, but this week marks the first time that the game is available via the PlayStation Network. It’s not entirely clear why this mobile-spawned gem of a game isn’t also available for the touchscreen-enabled PlayStation Vita, but Nex heartily approved of the PlayStation 3 port from 11-bit Studios in his review. For those who aren’t familiar, Anomaly is a sort of reversal on the tower defense genre, with players guiding a convoy around a series of maps and taking out various turrets and other emplacements while completing a variety of mission objectives. It’s not the most complex game of this sort that you’ll ever see, but it’s fun, well-designed, and eye-catchingly pretty.

To The MoonTo The Moon :: PC :: $9.99

This week’s lone PC offering isn’t a new release, but it’s new on Steam. Freebird Games’ To The Moon is a point-and-click adventure game with a visual aesthetic that resembles classic top-down RPGs like Final Fantasy. There’s no action in this game, however. To The Moon‘s main hook is its story, a well-written piece of fiction that explores the end of a person’s life through a sci-fi lens. If stories like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind appeal to you, then this is a game you’ll want to check out. Those who already own To The Moon are entitled to a free Steam key. Freebird is also currently working on the game’s second episode, which will presumably hit Steam on day one now that its predecessor is there.

Stickman Base Jumper :: iOS :: $0.99

It’s a quiet week on the mobile gaming front as well, though Djinnworks’ Stickman Base Jumper makes for some great Kleenex gaming until the next $0.99 time-eater comes along. I tend to think that the best mobile games explain themselves more effectively through images than words, and this game is no exception. So instead of reading along as I talk up the game’s simple-yet-eye-catching graphics and straightforward, largely trial-and-error-focused gameplay, why don’t you just watch the trailer?
