Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Warfighter franchise is to get a special extension at the end of this year, with maps adding real-world locations used in an upcoming movie about the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden being added, and proceeds from the expansion going to help real world veterans.
Videogames, movies and the real world are coming together in an unprecedented way to promote both Electronic Arts’ Medal of Honor Warfighter franchise and Sony Pictures’ Zero Dark Thirty, with part of the proceeds raised by the partnership going to help veterans organizations. Finally, a chance to feel really good about killing virtual bad guys, one at a time.
The partnership between EA and Sony will see exclusive multiplayer maps for the Medal of Honor Warfighter game being made available for download later this year that feature locations from Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming Zero Dark Thirty movie (If the title of that particular production sounds familiar, it may help when I tell you that it’s the new project from filmmaker Bigelow – best known, perhaps, for her work on the amazing The Hurt Locker – and screenwriter Mark Boal that brings the successful mission to locate and kill Osama Bin Laden to life). With each download expected to cost somewhere in the region of $9.99, EA has pledged to donate a portion of profits – “At least $1 million,” according to the company – to Project HONOR, a program designed to raise charitable contributions for non-profit veterans organizations across the country.
Two new locations will be added to the game via these packs, both of them based on real world areas. The first is Darra Gun Market, an arms bazaar in Pakistan, with Chitral being the second location; it’s an area in the far north of Pakistan that borders Afghanistan and China.
EA’s Chief Operating Officer, Peter Moore, said in a statement about the partnership, “Medal of Honor Warfighter is inspired by real world events, real operations, and real warriors,” adding that the partnership with Sony allows the company to “give back to the Special Operations community in honor of the sacrifices they and their families have made for their country and to connect people to the story of the greatest manhunt our world has seen.” It’s a tone that Boal, the screenwriter who worked with Bigelow onZero Dark Thirty, continues. “Working with Project HONOR is a meaningful way for us to continue our support for combat veterans throughout the armed services,” he said. “We are thrilled to be a part of this effort, and we’re humbled that EA is stepping up to the plate with such a significant contribution.”
As part of the deal between EA and Sony, a limited-edition Medal of Honor Warfighter disc will be released before the downloadable packs that will feature a trailer for Zero Dark Thirty. The downloadable map packs are scheduled for release during the week of December 17, timed for the release of Zero Dark Thirty in theaters.
