At its much anticipated press event in San Francisco, Apple has revealed the iPhone 5.

Apple has announced the iPhone 5 during its highly anticipated press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Apple’s Phil Schiller took the wraps off the next generation smartphone to huge applause from those gathered in the auditorium, so here’s everything we know so far about the brand-new Apple iPhone 5.

Schiller described the new device as “a jewel,” and the “most beautiful product we’ve ever made.” As expected, it has a 4-inch touchscreen with a 1136 x 640 pixel Retina-quality resolution, while the design is identical to those we’ve seen leaked over the past months.

Billed as the “world’s most advanced display,” Apple has removed a layer from the screen and incorporated the touch sensors into the display itself.

The body is made from glass and aluminum, and weighs just 112 grams. It’s also 18-percent thinner than the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Inside hides a new A6 processor, which is 22-percent smaller and twice as fast as the A5 in the 4S, as well as providing twice the graphics performance too.

The iPhone 5 also supports LTE bands, using a single chip for voice and data, and a single chip for the radio too. Like Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, the iPhone 5 has been equipped with dual-band Wi-Fi at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, plus 802.11a/b/g/n.

The Apple event is ongoing, and we’ll update this article with more information as it’s announced.

Pitchford: If Borderlands 2 comes to PS Vita, Sony has to make it

borderlands 2 playstation vita

Randy Pitchford waxed poetic about how bad he wants Borderlands 2 on Vita again this week, but he says Sony needs to make it happen.

Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software wants Borderlands 2 on the PlayStation Vita. Badly. If you doubt Pitchford’s desire to see his company’s humorous co-operative sci-fi shooter on Sony’s fancy handheld, re-examine his statements.

Who knows when his studio will have time to make it though? The PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 version of Borderlands 2 will hit stands on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean Gearbox’s work is over. It’s still got multiple DLC expansions to complete , a fifth character to balance and include in the game, and then finish any patches the game might need to fix unforeseen problems. That’s why Pitchford thinks Sony needs to step up and make Borderlands 2 for PlayStation Vita a reality.

“I think it would be awesome to have Borderlands 2 on the Vita but I’m really busy,” Pitchford told IGN, “We can’t do it ourselves. If some other studio was capable and could be trusted by us, and by a publishing partner, and by Sony, and someone wanted to invest in making that happen? I think Sony should step up and make that happen.”

“I don’t think it would cost a lot, relatively speaking, and I know there’s a lot of talented people who have learned how to use the Vita and could do a great job at that. If that machine started to align itself, I wouldn’t be the hold up. I would actually be the enabler.”

In other words, Pitchford isn’t interested in playing intellectual property protector, he’s only interested in seeing a quality version of his game on Sony’s powerful little plastic brick.

The cross-play potential is certainly alluring. “Imagine you could be playing the game on your PS3 and then, OK, I need to go on a road trip or I have to go to work or something. When I take my Vita with me, I have access to the same cloud save and can continue my character. Can you imagine how amazing that would be?”

There are crucial relationships between Sony and Borderlands publisher 2K Games that could smooth the process. 2K studio Irrational Games has already committed to making an entry in the BioShock series for Vita.

If Borderlands 2 were going to make the leap to Vita, though, Gearbox itself might need to be involved to ensure quality. Activision is a publishing partner with Sony for the PS Vita’s Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified. In the rush to get a popular property on the Vita, Sony and Activision handed the game off to Nihilistic rather than the Call of Duty series’ developers Treyarch and Infinity Ward. The result? A decidedly rough looking imitation of the console series.

Reporter goes undercover in iPhone 5 assembly plant

Reporter goes undercover in iPhone 5 assembly plant

A journalist goes undercover to help assemble new iPhone

As we wait for Apple to take the wraps off the iPhone 5, one Chinese journalist has come forward with his story about going undercover at Foxconn to assemble Cupertino's latest handset.

According to Cnet, the Shanghai Evening Post has published a detailed peek inside Foxconn's Tai Yuan factory, where an undercover reporter spent 10 days putting together on iPhone 5 back plates on the night shift.

Prior to being put on the assembly line, the journalist spent seven days being put through an "intensive" orientation before being put to work on the midnight to 6 a.m. night shift.

"Here to earn money"

The reporter's job entailed marking the iPhone 5 backplate with an oil-based paint pen in four different spots - as fast as humanly possible.

"By my own calculations, I have to mark five iPhone plates every minute, at least," an English translation posted to MIC Gadget notes. "For every 10 hours, I have to accomplish 3,000 iPhone 5 back plates."

The journalist's shift was devoid of even a single break, and the Foxconn supervisor reportedly pushed his team to work longer and harder.

"The supervisor shout out loud in front of us: 'Who wants to rest early at 5 a.m.!? We are all here to earn money! Let's work harder!'," the report reveals.

"I was thinking who on earth wants to work two extra hours overtime for only mere 27 yuan (USD$4)!?"

Judging from the conditions noted by the unnamed journalist, it seems Foxconn may still have some work ahead of it following the Fair Labor Association investigations earlier this year.

ArmA III developers arrested in Greece for spying on military base

bohemia interactive arrested in greece

Two Bohemia Interactive employees were accused of espionage on Sunday, but the Greek government has other issues with the ArmA III studio.

Czech developer Bohemia Interactive has had a solid 2012 so far. The runaway success of DayZ, the zombie apocalypse themed mod for its military simulators, brought massive mainstream attention to a line of games that has catered to a supportive but small audience. The company is hard at work on both the full version of that game as well as ArmA III, but the company’s smooth seas have grown choppy. Two developers from Bohemia’s ArmA team were arrested for “spying” in Greece.

The two unnamed employees, aged 28- and 33-years-old, were scouting locations for use in the next game on Lemnos, a small island in the Greek archipelago with a small population, some tourist trade, and one military air base. ArmA III’s primary setting, in addition to the Ai Stratis, is Lemnos and the developers were photographing that military base when they were arrested on Sunday under suspicion of espionage.

“We can confirm that two Bohemia Interactive employees, our colleagues and friends, were arrested during their holiday trip to Lemnos,” said Bohemia CEO Marek Spanel in a message on the developer’s forum, “They visited the island with the sole purpose of experiencing the island’s beautiful surroundings.”

“Since its establishment in 1999, Bohemia Interactive has created games based only upon publicly available information. We always respect the law and we’ve never instructed anybody to violate the laws of any country. The same is true for ArmA III. Currently, all our effort goes towards supporting the guys over there, as well as their friends and families affected by this difficult situation. We sincerely hope that this is an unfortunate misunderstanding of their passion as artists and creators of virtual worlds.”

The arrests may be more than just a misunderstanding. In 2011, the Greek government protested Bohemia’s use of Lemnos in ArmA III, claiming that its appearance in a war game might interest the tourist trade that keeps the island’s miniscule economy running. The game could also pose a security threat by realistically recreating the terrain.

ArmA III definitely has the potential to reach a wider audience than past entries in the series. The popularity of DayZ drove sales of ArmA II, necessary for playing the mod version of the zombie game, up a purported 500 percent in May.

CTK reported on Tuesday that the men have been transported to the island of Lesbos where they will be interrogated by a Greek prosecutor. The Czech government’s Greek consul Blanka Kovacsova is working to help the developers.
