Mugen Battery Pack Adds 6400mAh of Power to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Looking to dramatically expand the battery life in your new Samsung Galaxy Note 2? Thanks to the new Mugen Power battery you can now bring the battery up to an impressive 6400 mAh.

While the Note 2 already had a spacious 3100 mAh, the 6400 mAh is going to be especially useful for those that find themselves in situations where they either can’t charge very often or even for those that watch a lot of movies and other tasks that suck battery down quickly.

The Mugen battery features a new back cover and comes in white or gray to make sure your find one that matches your device. As for the price, it’s just $98.95, though it won’t start shipping until December 21st.

Any downsides to having a battery this big? Besides having to pay $100 to get it, there is likely going to be a noticeable amount of weight and bulk added to the phone. Enough weight to make any real difference for the average user? Probably not. What do you think?

Hands on: OblyTile adds life to your Windows Modern UI

The Windows 8 UI experience is certainly a new one, and it's fair to say it's missing a few bells and whistles. OblyTile can help you reclaim some space and add a little life to your Windows 8 Start Screen.

For the first time in decades, the Windows 8 Modern UI has revolutionized the way we view applications and content on a Windows computer. That said, it certainly has some missing elements. While we’re already well-aware of the rather serious lack of a Start menu, another issue with the Modern UI is its unfortunate lack of user control for the design of tiles.

Out of the box, Windows 8 doesn’t let you do much with tiles. Users can basically associate programs and apps with tiles, and can have Live Tiles from apps downloaded from the Windows Store; and that’s about it. There are some apps, such as Custom Tile Maker, that let you create tiles with your picture of choice. However, these apps don’t actually associate programs and icons with the same versatility as desktop icons, nor do they let you use the updated, prettier icons in lieu of standard icons as shortcuts for the Modern UI. If you’re looking for diversity and control for your tiles, and are disappointed with the way regular app icons look in the Modern UI, it’s time to give OblyTile a try.

OblyTile lets users create more complex tiles ranging from applications to folders, and even to Internet shortcuts. As you can see from our Windows 8 Start screen shown above, there are lovely icons for Photoshop, InDesign, Steam, and other essential applications. Normally, when you add an application to the Start screen, it automatically shows up as a tacky, and rather ugly, simple icon with a background color picked during your Windows 8 setup. However, with OblyTile, you interactively make icons and tiles for your favorite programs, folders, or even links to websites – something that’s impossible to do with the current Modern UI system.

Without OblyTile, the only tiles you can make are those associated with applications, or “dumb” tiles that are simply pictures. With OblyTile, you can customize each tile with an icon of your choosing, include your own custom background color. You can even add arguments to the shortcut just like you would with the Windows desktop. With these arguments, you can customize each icon to the precise function you need it for and essentially launch any file with just the touch of a button.

The app’s latest version now includes an option to preview your icons before saving them, as well as a tile manager that lets you save your tiles and edit them as you wish. You can also choose to show or hide the text of your new icon, which allows you to precisely adjust the style of your icons. If you’re looking for some great icons to use on your Windows 8 Modern UI, we highly suggest downloading Windows 8 Dock Icons on Deviantart by dAKirby309.

OblyTile is essential to getting the complete Windows 8 experience you deserve. With this nifty app, you can add a variety of useful icons to your Start screen without having to give up style or quality. Best of all, it’s free, but you can always make a donation to the hardworking developer. Happy customizing, folks!

Bethesda talks franchise following Dishonored’s runaway success

dishonored sales

Bethesda and Arkane's Dishonored proves that single player games and new intellectual properties can thrive no matter what technology they run on. The game has proven so successful that the publisher is already talking about its future as a series.

The popular consensus in the video game industry is that a game needs a multiplayer component to survive in today’s market. Electronic Arts, Insomnia Games, and many other studios say they’re finished with single player games. For all those game makers ready to give up on the solo game, you’d better take a look at Bethesda first. Following up on 2011’s multi-million selling The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a wholly single player affair, comes 2012’a breakout newcome Dishonored. The steampunk stealth game is doing so well that Bethesda is already talking about making more.

“We clearly have a new franchise,” Bethesda public relations chief Pete Hines told Destructoid.

While Hines didn’t give out a specific sales figure, he did say that Dishonored is holding its own against heavyweights like Halo 4 and Assassin’s Creed III. “I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is especially cool considering it’s new IP facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter. We did terrific numbers again this weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the #1 selling title over the holiday weekend. And Dishonored has really sold well overseas. So we’re very pleased and appreciate all the fans that have supported Dishonored and Arkane.”

In terms of sales numbers on the record, NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said earlier this month that more than 460,000 copies of Dishonored were sold at US retailers in the month of October. With November US retail sales, global sales, and digital sales, Dishonored is shaping up to be a major hit.

It’s not just impressive that a single player-only game like Dishonored has been so successful. Many in the industry believe it’s bad business to start a brand new franchise at the end of a console cycle. The sweet spot for a new IP on a popular gaming console is five years in, when the technology’s still selling, developers know how to best exploit it, and the next round of machine’s are on the way making it easy to bring a new property to the masses. Sony demonstrated this strategy well with God of War on PlayStation 2 in 2005, a period when the system was at its peak and the PlayStation 3 was due out in just one year. Dishonored has proven, though, that a new property can thrive even as the current technology landscape is in decline.

Windows Phone 8 update coming in December to squash irritating restart bug

Windows 8 phones microsoft bug fix

Microsoft says it has identified the cause of an annoying Windows Phone 8 bug, which causes some phones to randomly reboot, and will be issuing an over-the-air fix in December.

New operating systems often have a few annoying bugs, and Windows Phone 8 is no exception. Some owners of Microsoft’s new OS have been noticing one particularly frustrating problem, where the phone reboots itself and returns to the unlock screen. It’s annoying enough if you’re using the phone at the time, but even worse if it’s tucked away out of sight and you don’t notice for a while.

Although all handsets may be affected by the problem, the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X seem to be the worst offenders. However, the issue doesn’t seem to be very common, and certainly doesn’t affect all of these devices.

Microsoft is aware this is happening, and has issued a statement saying it’s preparing a fix, which should be ready in December. “We’re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners,” said a Microsoft spokesperson, which will come as welcome news to those affected. However, it hasn’t elaborated on what causes the restarts, or if all Windows Phone 8 devices could suffer from the bug.

When the fix comes next month, it’ll be an opportunity for Microsoft to test its new over-the-air update feature – a handy dry run for when the rumored first major update for Windows Phone 8, codename Apollo Plus, appears next year.

It’s good to hear that Microsoft has found the problem and is working on fixing it, but the non-committal December release date will offer scant comfort for those struggling with rebooting phones. After all, it seems to have plagued affected phones right from the start, meaning some could have been dealing with it for a month or more when the fix is finally issued. Here’s hoping Microsoft will deliver the goods at the beginning of the month, rather than after Christmas.

Leaked story and art details for Destiny describe Bungie’s post-Halo universe

Bungie MMO

Bungie has a reputation for being one of the most secretive game development studios but details about its first game since Halo: Reach have leaked to the web for a second time this year. Here are the first story details about Bungie's MMO Destiny.

It’s been months since we last heard about Halo-creator Bungie’s upcoming shooter MMO called Destiny. While the studio’s contract with Activision revealed many details about which platforms the shooter series would be available for over what period of time, little’s known about the game’s look or story. A new leak out of the studio sheds some light on just what Destiny is.

IGN received documents and concept art for the game from an unnamed reader on Tuesday. A synopsis of Destiny’s story shows that Bungie isn’t straying too far from its science fiction roots, with a tale about humanity’s future not unlike the one in Halo.

“Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age. A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘ knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and—eventually—overcoming it.”

In addition to the concept art image (officially released by Bungie) above that presumably depicts one of these knights protecting the last of mankind are other images, one of which appears to show the underside of the massive ship hovering above the Earth, which is referred to elsewhere in the documents as “The Traveler.”

Destiny has been described as an MMO in the past and the leaked document goes on to describe a game that’s “social at its core” as well as one that’s “fun and accessible to all.” Bungie’s co-founder is quoted saying, “Destiny is designed for your inner seven year old. We want to make it feel like a mythic adventure.”

The logo for the game appears alongside the logos for both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Bungie’s contract with Activision leaked in May described the first installment in a four game series as an Xbox exclusive due in 2013. The first Destiny would be for both the Xbox 360 and Durango/Xbox 720 with PC and PlayStation 4 versions to follow. This new document suggests that Bungie and Activision have altered their plans.

Bungie responded to the leak, saying, “We’re not quite ready to take the wraps off our next universe, but in light of recent events we thought we’d give fans something a little more official over at Bungie.net. Feel free to drop by and say hello! There’s much more to come.”
