Last week in “Maximizing Your Samsung Galaxy S3: Improving Battery Life” we went through all the most common tips and tricks out there when it comes to expanding your battery life.

While that particular article in the series was probably most useful for existing owners of the S3, today’s piece will be important to both brand new S3 users and those that are considering the S3 and want to know a bit more about what set’s it apart from the competition.

We are going to jump in and take a look at one of the biggest features that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has when compared to some of its competition: the ability to use motions and gestures to perform certain tasks.

Again, a seasoned Galaxy S3 owner might already know every single one of these but those that just purchased the S3 or are considering a purchase might find this run-through quite helpful.
Without further ado, let’s get started.

A Look at the Motion Menu

When it comes to controlling and configuring gesture controls for your Galaxy S3, it can all be done in the “Motion Menu”, which you’ll find by pulling down the Notifications drawer and tapping “Settings”. Within settings, move down until you find “Motion”. Click on that to open up the Motion Menu.

There are quite a few options in the menu, and in order to keep things organized, we will explain what each gesture is and how it works by starting at the top of the Motion Menu and working our way downward.

First off, make sure that you enable Motion through the check in the picture directly above– or else none of these will work. From there, you can individually turn on/off these components if you wish.

Direct Call

With direct call enabled, you simply need to browse through your contacts and when you are ready to talk to one of them you raise you phone and bring it towards your face like you would if you were are already talking to them– and from there it will start dialing automatically.

Smart Alert

When you place your Galaxy S3 down, it knows it and turns off the screen. The cool thing about “Smart Alert” is that when you go to pick it up again the phone will let out a vibration to make you aware of any alerts or missed calls that need your attention.

Tap to top

What’s tap to top you wonder? Basically its a way to bring yourself back to the top of your email messages, email contact list and phone contact list quickly. This function works in your email or contact app.

Let’s say you needed to look at a contact in the middle of the list, but now you need to get back to the top. Simply tap the top of the phone and it will jump back up to the top of the list. Keep in mind you are tapping the top of the phone itself, not the display.

Unfortunately this seems to only work with the native Email and Contacts apps, not with 3rd party apps like Gmail and Yahoo Mail.

Tilt to zoom

Next we have tilt to zoom, which basically works as an alternative to pinch and zoom. When on a webpage or looking at a picture, tap and hold the phone at two different spots and tilt the phone towards you to zoom in or away from you in order to zoom out.

Pan to move icon

When it comes to moving icons on your Home screen, with a typical Android device you touch and hold the icon and drag it to another screen. With Pan to move, you hold and touch the icon like normal and simply move your phone left or right. When you do so, you will see the home screens will move in the same direction as you move your phone.

Simply release the icon when you find the right home screen for the app and it will be moved to the new position.

Pan to browse images

When this is enabled, you can move around an image in which you are zoomed in to with ease. Basically all you have to do when enabled is touch and hold anywhere on the screen and move your phone up, down, left or right. Release to stop.

Shake to update
Certain apps like Email, News and Weather are designed to update their information when you simply shake your phone.

Turn over to mute/pause

While this feature might not be a good idea all the time, it can be useful in specific situations where you need silence from your phone. When this is enabled, your phone is muted. This means calls won’t make a peep and if you are listening to anything within Samsung’s Media apps they will pause when turned over.

For folks like myself that often keep their phone on their desk turned over while working and actually WANT to receive calls? This could be something you’d want to turn off.

Palm Swipe to Capture

This “hand gesture” feature works by having you swipe your hand across your phone’s screen, in which it will then take a screenshot. As simple as that.

Palm touch to mute/pause

With this feature you basically get an alternative to turning your phone over. It works by having you cover your Galaxy S3 handset with the palm of your hand and it will then mute the message, video/song or ring tone. Keep in mind though that this works only with Samsung’s stock apps.

Summing it up…

Well that pretty much sums up the gestures and motion controls for the Samsung Galaxy S3. As you can see, there is a lot of extra functionality here that makes the S3 rather unique. Are all of these going to be useful for you? Probably not.

Some folks like the idea of gesture/motion controls to make things easier, others prefer more traditional methods. Either way, its nice that the Samsung Galaxy S3 gives us that choice.

We could be on the brink of a new industrial revolution, and it's all down to a single layer of carbon atoms called Graphene.

Graphene is the thinnest, strongest, lightest, stiffest material ever made, and if it lives up to its potential it could change pretty much everything.

Why graphene is exciting

Graphene can do almost anything bar making you a better dancer or more skilful in bed. Fancy a superconductor that works at room temperature? Graphene can do that. Want to make bendy OLED touchscreens, or print solar cells, or make something harder than diamond? Or make thin, light structures that are 200 times stronger than ones made from steel? Graphene's good for all that too.

Speaking to Nature magazine, graphene expert and Nobel laureate Andre Geim explained: "It's the thinnest possible material you can imagine. It also has the largest surface-to-weight ratio: with one gram of graphene you can cover several football pitches... it's also the strongest material ever measured; it's the stiffest material we know; it's the most stretchable crystal. That's not the full list of superlatives, but it's pretty impressive."

Conspiracy theorists believe that graphene is a material left on Earth by - or rather, stolen from - space aliens. The theory reckons it's no coincidence that the theory behind graphene was first published in 1947, just when the US was dismantling UFOs in Roswell.

There's a bit of a graphene gold rush

According to figures from Cambridge Intellectual Property, in 2012 there were an extraordinary 7,351 graphene patents and patent applications, with the majority - 2,200 - filed by Chinese institutions and corporations.

The US is next with 1,754 patents, but while the UK kicked off the whole frenzy by publishing the first significant research back in 2004, it's far behind in the patent stakes: it only filed 54. That might explain why chancellor George Osborne has actually decided to spend some money for once: the UK government is supporting graphene research to the tune of £60 million.

Here's an interesting nugget spotted by the Cambridge IP: the biggest single corporate patent holder is Samsung, with 407 patents to IBM's 134.

Uses for graphene are starting to snowball

Graphene will make some people very rich, and we're already seeing practical uses of the technology: University of Manchester researchers have developed a graphene transistor that could enable much faster computing, while other research is helping us understand the substance's electrical and magnetic behaviour.

Graphene is being used to make "extremely efficient" flexible OLEDs for displays, highly conductive nanomaterials for the electronics industry and exceptionally powerful tennis rackets, and some people want to use it to make lightning-powered skyscrapers or to replace carbon fibre in cars and other vehicles.

We're not finished yet. It's also being used to make better batteries, and some people reckon it might even stop the next Lance Armstrong from getting away with doping: researchers are working on a system that incorporates graphene "to detect a single molecule of a drug in a few minutes".

It could be great for the environment

Today's vehicles, even electric ones, still face the same old problem: cars, trucks and trains are heavy, and pushing something heavy around the place at high speed uses enormous amounts of energy. Cutting weight is a priority, and today's vehicles are increasingly using aluminium and carbon fibre to achieve that.

Graphene would make those vehicles' weight savings look insignificant, ushering in an era of super-light transport that uses considerably less energy to start, steer and stop.

It has other environmental uses too: scientists at Moscow State University and Rice University have found that graphene is very good at extracting radioactive materials from water. They believe that it could be used to clean up nuclear accidents, for more efficient mining of rare metals, or for oil extraction.

Graphene is coming sooner rather than later

Firms such as Samsung and Nokia are getting into graphene in a big way, with the first commercial products based on the material due in 2013 or 2014.

As Geim told Nature, when he was in South Korea he was "shown a graphene roadmap, compiled by Samsung. On this roadmap were approximately 50 dots, corresponding to particular applications. One of the closest applications with a reasonable market value was a flexible touchscreen. Samsung expects something within two to three years." That was three years ago.

Is Graphine being overhyped?

Writing in The Guardian, Philip Ball urges caution. While so-called miracle materials "can still grab headlines and conjure up utopian visions", they don't always deliver.

"High-temperature superconductors, which nabbed a Nobel in 1987, would give us Maglev trains and loss-free power lines. Carbon nanotubes... would anchor a space elevator and transform microelectronics. These things haven't materialised", he points out.

NEC Medias W is a Dual-screen, Folding Smartphone

As the old saying goes “bigger is better”. Samsung followed this rule with the original Note and Huawei are hoping for similar success with the Ascend Mate. Now we have NEC’s uber large Android phone, but rather than one big screen the NEC Medias W boasts two 4.3-inch panels.

The concept is similar to the Sony Tablet P, and allows for either two apps to run at once utilizing their own screens, or taking up both screens for a larger view of things.

Currently only certain apps such as Google Maps, the web browser and media players make use of the dual-screen function. The ability to fold the phone in half and share videos, and photos with people sitting opposite sounds particularly useful, and could be used in future games (Connect 4, Battleships etc).

The Medias W is currently only available in Japan, and it seems as though this dual-screen wonder might stay that way for sometime to come. THQ decides to sell individual assets to Crytek, Sega, others

Late last year it was revealed that THQ had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, reportedly entering into a stalking horse bid with investment firm Clearlake Capital Group shortly after. We have now learned the fate of the games company: they will be broken apart and sold to various competitors.

A letter sent to THQ employees from CEO Brian Farrell and President Jason Rubin said the company considered the original stalking horse bid from Clearlake Capital Group as well as individual offers for the rights to various franchises. Ultimately THQ decided on the latter as it would net more than a single buyer for the majority of the company.

At this hour, we know that THQ has made the following deals:

  • Crytek will take over the Homefront franchise
  • Koch Media will buy Volition (of Saint's Row fame) and Metro: Last Light assets
  • Sega will purchase Relic, known for Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40K
  • Take 2 will buy the "Evolve" assets
  • Ubisoft will obtain THQ Montreal and South Park assets

Sales of the above assets must still be cleared by bankruptcy court, although THQ appears confident that most of the deals will close by the end of the week. Most employees have been laid off although it’s possible that the new owners could rehire some of the staffers.

Vigil, the developers behind Darksiders, will remain with THQ alongside the company’s publishing business through the bankruptcy proceedings. The plan is to find a buyer for these assets at a later date.

Google confirms solving Nexus supply is a main priority

Do you have a Nexus 4 or Nexus 10? If you have feel free to sit back and feel a bit smug, as there are still thousands of potential customers still waiting for their chance of a bit of Nexus love.

If you’re one of the many still waiting then Google’s Larry Page feels your pain and is making the Nexus supply problems a priority of the search giant’s.

At a recent earnings call, Page addressed the shortages of both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 tablet and promised that he plans to make the issue “an absolute priority”. Details on how Google plan to ease pressure from LG and Samsung to meet demand weren’t provided, and all parties are reluctant to give any indication of a time frame to the fix.

While overwhelming demand is what most companies strive for when launching a new product, the problems with Nexus device shortages has driven a number of possible Nexus owners to purchase alternative devices.
