RIM confirms BlackBerry 10 handsets are ready

Bells and whistles now being added.

Research in Motion looks set to deliver on its promise of a delayed, early 2013 launch for BlackBerry 10 as it confirms the project is now in its final stages.

Speaking to AllThingsD, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins revealed the Canadian firm is now just "polishing" the operating system, which is pretty much complete.

Heins also confirmed that the first BB10 handsets are ready to go and that the firm is ready to deal a "one-two punch" to the market.

RIM gets ready to rumble

The one-two attack to which Heins is referring relates to the two handsets RIM plans to launch alongside the BlackBerry 10 platform, one will be a full-touchscreen device, while the other will sport the famous BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard.

Apparently RIM is going to produce devices for the low-, mid- and high-end markets, although exact prices for the first wave of handsets, along with design and specs, are still unknown.

BB10 is the make or break move for RIM, and the delay in its launch will not have helped, but Heins is committed to producing a quality product: "We could have done it in Q4, but we wouldn't have gotten good feedback from customers."

Beta devices doing the rounds

The Wall Street Journal reports that RIM now has two "nearly complete" BlackBerry 10 beta devices which it's taking to various carriers, to show off what the new system, and new phones, are capable of.

According to an unknown WSJ source, BB10 shows a "marked improvement" over rival handsets, although it's unclear if the source is directly connected to RIM, and if so is likely to say that anyway.

It will be interesting to see how carriers react to BlackBerry 10, as RIM really needs to get as many on board as possible if the platform is going to succeed.
