Likely Samsung Galaxy S4 screen outed

One of the geekier family photos

It seems that the new Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature a 4.99-inch, 1080p display with superb sharpness when launched later this year.

Spotted by the chaps over at Anandtech, the most pertinent 'find' was Samsung showing off a 5-inch screen from its Display arm, and it makes a lot of sense that it will be coming to the next handset.

Shown as a follow-on from the Samsung Galaxy Note 2's 5.55-inch screen, the next generation display is set to head to manufacturers in Q1 2013, which would place it nicely in the time frame for a Q2 handset launch.

Anandtech states that it believes that the subpixel arrangement is RGB, which would be a big boost to Samsung as some of the more technical critics were vocal in their displeasure at the technology used in the Galaxy S3 – this new screen would provide a more even colour.

Flexible friends

The other great news is that Samsung reckons it's managed to get a 25 per cent power saving on the new OLED screen – but with so many more pixels and a larger size, chances are it will likely remain the same consumption as on the previous models.

A low power mode was also mentioned, which could cut the battery drain almost in half - but this will likely be a mode that will have to be activated by the user when worried about juice levels.

However, there's something a lot more interesting lurking on the stand, and something that would drop jaws if it landed on the Samsung Galaxy S4 – a curved lip to the screen.

It's along the same lines as the flexible screens we've been hearing so much about recently, but with a small curve at the bottom of the screen to create a gorgeous design and extra information even when the flat part of the display is turned off.

Sadly, the flexible material doesn't look set to land any time soon, but here's hoping when the Galaxy S5 rolls around we'll be looking at technology that really pushes phone design on another step.
