Evasi0n iPhone 5, iPad mini jailbreak now available

Last week we published a story pointing out that a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1 had just been released. That hack only worked on older pre-A5 iOS devices like the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS but we were told at the time to be on the lookout for a revised version in the near future that would support all iOS devices.

That version, compatible with newer products like the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini, is now available thanks to a new tool called evasi0n. The jailbreak was created by a team known as evad3rs and works with Mac, Windows and Linux. It marks the first time that a jailbreak has been offered for Apple’s latest hardware.

Evasi0n’s website points out that you’ll need a computer running Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.5 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64), an iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1 (you may check in Settings / General / About => Version), a USB cable to connect the device to the computer and about five minutes of your time to complete the process.

The group recommends backing up your device before using evasi0n. Furthermore, you should disable the passcode on your device beforehand as it can cause issues as well as avoid all iOS and iTunes related tasks until the hack is complete. In the event that the jailbreak process hangs, you can safely power down the device and try again.

As always, you should jailbreak at your own risk as it will void your warranty and could possibly brick your device.
