With the LG Nexus 4, we’ve so far seen 20-40 minute sell outs every time the phone has arrived or returned to Google Play. There have also been a lot of issues about getting orders out, or even processing them.
While the website and processing issues pretty much are without a doubt Google’s fault, who is to blame for the shortage?
LG has now come out to talk about the LG Nexus 4′s strong demand. According to LG they simply find that “high demand” is the problem. They can’t keep up. You have to wonder, what kind of answer is that? Obviously there is high demand, the issues we really want to know is why Google and LG weren’t prepared for this in a bigger way.
Pricing a quad-core smartphone with all around stellar specs at just $299 was bound to get attention globally. People are sick of contracts and paying an arm-and-leg for a smartphone.
Bottom-line though is we can probably blame Google for botching this one. Personally, I like the LG Nexus 4 and I think Google is a good company, but it is clear that they didn’t order enough handsets to begin with. LG was likely just ramping up and producing what it was asked by Google.
When Google realized it had ordered too little, they likely put the pressure on LG but so far the company hasn’t been able to keep up.
The good news is that in time, the supply chain will work itself out and these shortages will disappear. The big question is how many units will LG and Google have actually sold when the dust clears?
Will it be some massive and impressive number or will it turn out that Google just didn’t have much stock from the beginning? What do you think?
